HS Linggo ng Wika

by Pia Lazaro, Grade 10

From Wednesday, August 23, until Friday, August 25, the high school student body, along with teachers, parents, guests and staff, celebrated the annual Linggo ng Wika at Kasaysayan. This yearly tradition has served as an avenue for students to exhibit their creativity, school spirit, and love for our country. This year’s theme was Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago.

Throughout the week, students participated in a handful of activities and events. One of the activities we greatly enjoyed was the talk by Mr. Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad, Jr., TV news anchor/reporter/producer. In his talk, we learned the importance of awareness when it comes to the needs of the country and filtering fact from opinion. Mr. Manicad also showed inspiring videos and narrated several of his moving experiences as a news reporter. Later that day, a violinist, Mr. Joseph Brian, and pianist, Mr. Jesper Colleen Mercado, performed a repertoire of 10 popular Filipino songs, greatly enjoyed by everyone. On another day, Grades 7 to 12 students participated in the Palarong Pinoy which included games such as karera ng sako, karera ng bao, patintero, and karera ng itlog sa kutsara. We had so much fun playing, while observing sportsmanship, batch unity, teamwork, and camaraderie.

Finally, after a month of planning and practicing, the Junior High School students showcased their class performances in the gym. It started with the Grade 7’s authentic Philippine festival-based song, dance, and instrumental numbers; followed by Grade 8’s traditional dances inspired by the Spanish era; then Grade 9’s sabayang pagbigkas and pinoy jazz renditions; and ended with Grade 10’s upbeat American period-inspired dances. The winners of the monologo and balagtasan contests performed as well. Meanwhile, the Senior High School students participated in a quizbee, gave heartfelt speeches in Filipino, and engaged in a fun karaoke session with their teachers. The festivities ended with the salu-salo with a wide offering of Filipino dishes.

This year’s celebration of Linggo ng Wika truly continues to ignite in our hearts the fire of the true Filipino spirit.
